I dont't care what anyone else thinks but,

at several points in his career, I used to think Stephen Fleming bordered on genius. True class. Got caught smoking pot in South Africa and was later made captain of his team - a post that he held on to, through the many captains every other team was churning out. Was he cool or what? Everyone kept telling us he was a great captain, and I will believe that without any evidence - anecdotal or statistical. And then the there was that on drive.

He was all that John. I think he did a decent job as skipper.

I still remember his 91 on his first outing against India....I thought then that this player would end up with something to cherish.

Today, I'll admit I'm disappointed with his stats as a player, but he did well as a captain. Many times I felt he was holding back a bit...a Kiwi trait I thought and explained it away thus.

He played when his team needed him to most.

one of the coolest guys on a cricket field i've ever seen. and true captain.

always delivered and led his team when they needed him most. and was a super guy to watch on a good day.

his stats may not do him justice as a batsman but he was leagues ahead as a captain. deserves to be kept aside as one of the greats in that category.

John,
there was that hands folded in the slips, cool demeanour - almost made Michael Vaughan look frantic. And I agree, dump the numbers, and you tend to appreciate Fleming a lot more. The whole episode with Bracewell was mighty strange though.

Agreed, Naked. He was the 'shaken not stirred' guy of cricket.

he managed the resources very well and NZ always looked different whenever he was in...managed to get under the skin of aussies...

if for once stats can be put aside the real fleming will stand up and tall...

i also feel that had bond remained relatively injury free (as also cairns) his record as captain could have been different...
